flowers flowers everywhere!

The sweet aroma of flowers has filled my studio for the last few weeks, as I have embarked on the beginning phases of my upcoming series of "Flora"-inspired paintings (to debut at Robert Lange Studios in May 2014).  I have really enjoyed the hands on process of picking out gorgeous flowers and constructing the many floral pieces for my models to wear.  My pursuit of outdoor settings for some of the paintings has forced me to leave my studio and bask in the beauty of the city that I live in and love, Savannah, GA.  Here are some behind the scenes images:

Art Renewal Center 2012-2013 Salon - Honorable Mention & Finalist!

I just received news that my paintings have been chosen for the prestigious Art Renewal Center (ARC) 2012-2013 Salon (for the third year in a row)!  My painting, Homecoming, has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the Figurative Category, and two of my paintings have been chosen as Finalists in the Figurative Category! Homecoming and Sentiment were created for my most recent show "Nuance" at Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, SC - Both paintings are sold, but you can view other paintings from the show and more available work on the gallery's website here.  Morning Solitude is available at Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ.  Congrats to all the deserving winners and finalists - check them out here.

Robert Lange Studios "Evolution" Group Show

I often paint people who are dear friends, but for Robert Lange Studios' upcoming group show, Evolution, I have drawn a subject very close to me - my father.  Here are my interpretations of him in 1992 and now in 2013:

The evolution of my artistic ability so far as well as the inevitable evolution of life can be seen in the juxtaposition of two drawings I have done of my father - one when I was eight years old and one at my current age of 29.

My childhood drawing describes the form in simple terms, whereas the addition of elements such as light play a big role in my current work.  My artistic journey during the 21 years in between these two drawings has gone from simple definition of form, to hyperrealistic, and then back towards a more simplified approach combining elements of both styles.  At one point, I was preoccupied with fully rendering every inch of my picture plane as "accurately" and "realistically" as possible, thinking that including every precise detail was the best way to portray my subjects.  However, I have since intentionally moved away from that mindset into what I feel is a more sophisticated way of depicting my subjects.  One that allows for more expression, and one in which I use a variety of marks and techniques such as sharpening and softening edges to selectively focus the viewers attention.  Besides, the phenomenon of visual recognition, in which our brain can fill in the gaps and immediately recognize something with just a few basic shapes, is evident in my first drawing.  Specifically, the human mind is so in tune with the human figure that it is not necessary to depict every last detail.

Perhaps more fascinating than the maturing of my drawing skills as seen through these drawings, is the apparent aging of my father.  In the first drawing he was 41 years old and he is now 62.  At 41, I was compelled to capture the contrasting shapes of his black hair and smooth skin.  My dad still has the same overall profile, but his hairline has moved a bit further back exposing more of his forehead now.  The details of his aging skin have become an area of interest.  His beard has since changed from black to mostly white.  In both of these drawings, however, my eye first goes to his eye.  And in it you can still see his same, beautiful soul.

Legacy Gallery's "Holiday Small Works Show"

For this year's Small Works show at Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ, I decided to do something a little different for me.  Instead of the usual figure, eggs from my friend's chicken coup were the perfect model!  They stayed very still and didn't move a muscle.  The opening for this show is tonight, December 6.  For more information and to preview the show, visit the gallery's website.

Waterhouse Gallery's "Great American Figurative Show"

I'm honored once again to be among some incredibly talented figurative artists in this year's "Great American Figurative Show" at Waterhouse Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA.  The opening took place in November, but my piece, In Bloom, will hang through the new year.  See the piece below and also on the gallery's website.  While you're there, take a look at the whole show.  Below is a glimpse of the first article I authored as part of the Cecilia Beaux Forum's Literature Committee, published in the Journal of the Portrait Society of America. It is about Elizabeth Jane Gardner Bouguereau (William-Adolphe Bouguerea's wife).  Being invited into the Literature Committee was a huge honor, and I look forward to continued research and writing about women artists.

"Nuance" three-women-show - November

I am so so so excited about the upcoming three-women-show "Nuance" featuring new work by Ali Cavanaugh, Mia Bergeron and me.  The show runs November 2-28 at Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, SC.  All three of us will be at the opening and we'd love to meet you!  So come stop by if you're in the area!!  Did I mention how excited I am?!  Can't wait to see all the work come together in just a few short weeks... Amy Lind - Recipient of Southwest Art Magazine Editor's Award of Excellence

I am delighted to announce that my painting, Katie, received "Southwest Art Editor's Award of Excellence" at The Bennington Center for the Arts recent show Artists for the New Century! The editors of three national art magazines, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur and Southwest Art, selected 75 artists to be in the show.  The three editors then each chose their favorite piece from the show to receive an award. It was a tremendous honor for me to have even been invited to participate in the show alongside such spectacular spectacular artists.  The other two winning artists/paintings are amazing, and I am completely humbled to be one of the three winning artists!  Congratulations to David Hettinger and Julio Reyes.

"Art Shop and Hop" - Featured Artist at Paris Market & Brocante in Savannah, GA

After living in Savannah again for almost a year and a half now, I'm excited to debut my work in this lovely town of mine at one of my favorite local haunts, The Paris Market & Brocante!  They have asked me to be their featured artist for the upcoming First Friday "Art Shop and Hop" at stores and boutiques along Broughton Street.  Each store is showcasing artwork by a different local artist for this month's Shop and Hop theme "an evening of art".  I am so lucky, because I love love love the aesthetic of Paris Market and think my paintings will look right at home there!  :)

So please come support local artists and boutiques.  Participating Broughton St. stores will be open late from 6-9pm Friday, June 1.  You will undoubtedly find beautiful goodies and treasures at the Paris Market!  I'll be there from 6-9 and would love to see/meet you!  My work will stay on display through July 5.

"Artists for the New Century" Group Show at Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, VT

"American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur and Southwest Art, at the request of The Bennington, have nominated 75 artists to take part in this year's Artists for the New Century.  The show includes artists who in the past five years have garnered an increasing amount of respect and recognition from peers and collectors alike due to their impressive talent and consistent technical ability. This will be a wonderful opportunity to become familiar with and purchase art by some of the best new talent on the representational art scene. The paintings will be on exhibit June 9  - July 15, 2012 and all work will be for sale." "Figuratively Speaking" Group Show at Gutstein Gallery in Savannah, GA

I will have these two quick oil studies from life as well as a full figure painting in this group show.  This show is put on by the Savannah College of Art and Design exhibitions, and it will be on view at Gutstein Gallery (201 E. Broughton St., Savannah, GA) from June 18 – Aug. 5, 2012 with a reception on June 29, from 6-7:30 p.m. '"Figuratively Speaking" highlights SCAD artists who depict or use the body in original and dynamic ways.  The human figure has been a source of visual reference and reverence, greatly impacting aesthetics in both art and design for centuries. The body has signified the ideal form in both art and architecture, expressing emotional and theatrical sentiment through pose and gestural mark-making and representing political and social forces through an array of conceptual expressions across all artistic media."

"Everything Changes" Group Show at Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, SC

Tonight - Friday, May 4 - is the opening reception for Robert Lange Studios invitational group show.  Works from 35 artists will be on view throughout the gallery.  Each artist was asked to depict the same subject in two or more different canvases, interpreting the idea that "everything changes."  Here are my paintings for the show.  It was fun to take a quick break from the figure and paint another one of my loves, SWEETS!  And in particular --- cupcakes!!  My job sure was tough when I had to eat that cupcake...  : )

"Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art" - Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ

I am honored to have the below painting juried into this year's Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art, which opened April 20th and lasts until May 20th.  The show features representational figurative, portrait, still life, floral, landscape, interior, wildlife, and western themes.  Check out all the work here.  If you're in the area, I recommend stopping by to see all the fabulous work in person!  The Salon is hosted by The Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ and is on view in the 10,000 sq. ft. space in the upper level of their gallery.

Oxford American 100 under 100 The New Superstars of Southern Art

I'm a little late posting this, but that doesn't mean I'm not super excited and honored to be one of Oxford American's "100 under 100 New Superstars of Southern Art"!  Each year, this fantastic magazine puts out a "visual south" issue.  This year, I was nominated by a fellow southerner and VERY talented artist Cedric Smith.  Both his paintings and photography are equally wonderful.  On top of selling his work at galleries in Paris and NYC (to name a few places), he has recently started a successful and amusing blog consisting of his photos documenting stylish people in everyday life around town.  Check it out: yourewelcomesavannah.com.  And here is his website of paintings: cedricsmith.com

My first children's book made the NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERS LIST!!!

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On: Things About Me (the children's picture book that I painted) has made the rounds - from various online sources to more notably being featured in Entertainment Weekly, People Magazine, and TIME Magazine.com.  As if that all isn't exciting enough, I just found out that the book made last week's New York Times Best Sellers list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm absolutely over. the. moooooon!!!

Congrats to all involved in making the book so spectacular - especially Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp (co-creators of Marcel and authors of the book)!!
